Kenworth, Peterbilt trucks recalled for steering component issue

Paccar is recalling thousands of various Kenworth and Peterbilt truck models upon discovering an issue with the steering component.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, Paccar's recall affects more than a dozen models of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks with a model year range 2018-20. The Dana D-Series axle steer arm fasteners that attach the steering arm to the steering knuckle may fail. Fastener failure can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Nearly 18,000 trucks are part of the recall (all model years 2018-20 unless otherwise noted).

As of May 5, Paccar reported it was working on a remedy for affected Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks.

Paccar said it would notify truck owners around June 24. In the meantime, Kenworth owners can contact customer service at 425-828-5888 with recall number 22 KWB. Peterbilt owners can call 940-591-4220 with recall number 22 PBB. NHTSA's number for this recall is 22V-277.

Although nearly 18,000 trucks are potentially affected by the recall, Paccar estimates only 1% of those trucks have the defect.

Paccar first received notice of the defect in August 2020. Both Paccar and Dana issued regular updates to NHTSA while investigating the issue, including more than 150 inspections. A recall was deemed necessary in April.
